energy storage energy manageGigaom has identified 12 battery technology and energy storage service startups that have completed sizable demonstration projects or started to deploy their energy storage systems more widely:

  1. Aquion Energy: This Pennsylvania-based startup has secured a deal to install a 1 MWh battery that will store electricity from a 176 kW solar energy system off Hawaii’s Kona Coast.
  2. Stem: The California company will use some of the $27 million series B funding it recently raised to develop, license or buy software technology to boost its energy management service.
  3. EnerVault: Last year, the company completed a 1 MWh flow battery system at an almond farm in California’s Central Valley.
  4. Sunverge Energy: The battery system designer and installer teamed up with SunPower last year. The two companies are co-marketing their solar-and-battery combination for a commercial rollout this year.
  5. Ice Energy: The company recently won a deal to supply Southern California Edison with 25.6 MW of service from Ice Energy systems across different locations.
  6. Advanced Microgrid Solutions: This project developer was selected by Southern California Edison to provide 50 MW of services.
  7. Coda Energy: The lithium-ion battery systems designer and electronics and software developer is working on a 510 kW demonstration project at its headquarters, which could deliver 1.05 MWh of energy.
  8. Imergy Power Systems: The flow battery developer announced a 100 kW demonstration project that will deliver 400 kWh of energy at a microgrid project at a US Navy site in Port Hueneme, California.
  9. Growing Energy Labs: This startup has developed an operating system to make battery systems work well with solar panels or heating and cooling systems.
  10. Green Charge Networks: As of a year ago, Green Charge had lined up $10 million for financing projects that use its software to manage its lithium-ion battery systems.
  11. Ambri: The liquid metal battery developer raised a $35 million series C round last year to bring its technology to market. The company plans to install prototype systems this year.
  12. Solar Grid Storage: This project developer sells and installs a bundle of battery systems with solar panels and electric car charging equipment. The company’s projects are mostly on the East Coast.
