Smart Meters Catch Fire, Again

July 28, 2014 By Linda Hardesty

SaskPower energy manageCanadian utility SaskPower has temporarily suspended its new smart meter installations while it investigates the cause of six smart meter fires.

To date, SaskPower has installed about 105,000 Sensus smart meters of its intended 500,000-meter rollout.

SaskPower says, “It’s important to note that in all cases the problem has been contained to the location of the meter.”

Smart meter installations will resume when SaskPower has concluded investigations and is comfortable that all risks have been mitigated as fully as possible.

In 2012, Sensus meters caused fires in Peco’s territory in Philadelphia. Peco Energy ultimately discontinued the installation of Sensus meters and switched to Landis+Gyr meters.
