Solar Power Breakthrough Near?
Popular Mechanics writes that researchers are close to a breakthrough that could have significant ramifications for solar power.
The story – which is based on a paper published in ACS Central Science – looks at research from the University of California, Berkeley. Today, solar panels store power in batteries. The research is aimed at enabling the solar power to create what the story says is “clean-burning hydrogen gas.” The advantage, the piece says, is that hydrogen can be stored indefinitely and has “the highest energy density of any gas or liquid fuel.” The process described in the story suggests that the process could be relatively simple and straightforward.
The Charlotte Observer late last month reported that Merino Mill in Mooresville, NC has installed 5,100 solar panels. It is the second largest installation in the state and, the owner promises, eventually will be the largest.
