US Energy Production at All-Time High, Per Annual Energy Review 2011

The US Energy Information Administration released its Annual Energy Review 2011, providing the EIA’s most comprehensive record of US historically integrated energy statistics from 1949 through 2011. Preliminary summary statistics from the report indicate the following:

  • In 2011, US primary energy production reached a record high of 78 quadrillion Btu. US renewable energy production also reached a record high of 9 quadrillion Btu. From 2010 to 2011, dry natural gas production increased 8 percent, crude oil production increased 3 percent, and coal production increased 1 percent. Nuclear electric power production decreased 2 percent.
  • US primary energy consumption totaled 97 quadrillion Btu in 2011, down slightly from the 2010 level. From 2010 to 2011, US renewable energy consumption increased 13 percent, and natural gas consumption increased 2 percent. US coal consumption decreased 6 percent; petroleum and nuclear electric power consumption each decreased 2 percent.
  • In 2011, total US energy consumption decreased in three of the four end-use sectors. Industrial consumption increased 1 percent from the previous year’s level. Consumption in the residential and transportation sectors decreased 1 percent, while commercial sector consumption was down slightly.
  • From 2010 to 2011, US primary energy net imports declined to 18 quadrillion Btu, their lowest level since 1995. Petroleum net imports totaled 19 quadrillion Btu in 2011.
  • US carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption fell 2 percent from 2010 to 2011.
