InsulationThe efficiency of existing buildings will become a greater focus of greenhouse gas reduction efforts, according to a Bloomberg story.

The piece quotes U.S. Green Building Council statistics that buildings account for 39 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. To date, the piece suggests, the focus has been on increasing efficiency in new buildings. In addition to the environment, a big winner in the drive to increase the efficiency of existing structures will be consultants and contractors. Among the most common steps are retrofitting ventilation systems and fixtures, replacing windows, doors and roofs and installing environmental controls, the story says.

The story says that New York and California have taken the lead in these efforts. Chicago warrants mention alongside those two states, however. The city is hosting three projects – by the Archdiocese of Chicago, Retrofit Chicago and the city itself – that aim to improve the efficiency of existing structures.
