boaThe Bank of America said that it plans to be carbon neutral by 2020.

The company said that it will reduce location-based greenhouse gas emissions by half, energy use by 40 percent and water use by 45 percent in its worldwide operations. The company, in a move similar to one announced last week by General Motors, has joined RE1000, a global initiative to promote corporate environmental responsibility.

The company said that from 2010 to last year the company reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by 37 percent through implementation of energy efficiency projects. Ways of achieving these goals include modernization of its datacenters and reductions in energy and water use. The Bank of America, the press release says, is buying wind power in Texas to power the datacenter in that state. A wide variety of energy efficiency programs, including lighting upgrades, are set for its 900 financial centers this year.
