Chrysler Takes ISO 50001 for a Spin at Canadian Plant

Chrysler Energy ManageChrysler Group’s Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, achieved ISO 50001: 2011 Energy Management certification.

The plant’s achievements in energy management range from lighting control projects developed and implemented by plant electricians at an estimated savings of $110,000 in annual electricity costs, to investment in an automated heating and ventilation management system and scheduler with an estimated savings of almost $2 million in annual electricity and natural gas costs.

The Brampton facility served as the pilot plant for ISO 50001 certification among Chrysler Group’s North American automotive assembly plants. The remaining plants are expected to be certified by the end of 2014. The Ontario plant had previously achieved certification against a number of international standards, among them ISO 9001 for Quality and ISO 14001 for Environmental Management.

Researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory recently collaborated with colleagues from Energetics and the DOE to assess the costs and benefits of industrial facilities being certified to the Superior Energy Performance (SEP) program, and to examine the business value of SEP and ISO 50001. They found that the average cost of implementing ISO 50001 and being certified to SEP came to $319,000 per facility, with fully loaded costs ranging from $207,000 to $498,000.

  1. Well done Chrysler. $2million are truly significant savings and worth boasting about. Despiet what appear as significant costs for SEP certification, it is all relative to size of facility and the average payback for SEP program certification for the initial facilities is 1.7 years. The costs included metering which all facilities point out would have a long term benefits with low maintenance costs.
