Ingersoll-Rand Acquires Agilis Energy to Create Energy Efficient Manufacturing Powerhouse

Ingersoll-Rand plc, an industrial manufacturing company with a focus on sustainable and efficient environments, has acquired the technology assets and intellectual property of Raleigh, N.C.-based Agilis Energy, LLC, an energy data analytics company.

CEO, co-founder and chief technology officer of Agilis Energy, Joseph Hirl, joins Ingersoll Rand as the new vice president of energy services and controls for the company’s commercial HVAC business in North America.

Ingersoll Rand saw Agilis Energy as a perfect complement to its current business based on many aspects. The first being that the Agilis Energy uses patented, smart-meter energy analytics applications and a unique system approach to help large commercial, multi-family residential, and industrial sector companies achieve 10-25% annual energy savings. Further, the company helps customers understand and quantify energy usage patterns by visualizing building performance issues, quantifying the impact and value of energy improvements.

Agilis Energy is the analytics software that powers Trane Energy Optics, which is a tool used by Trane during energy assessments with customers. Trane Energy Optics uses high interval energy and weather data to provide quick, non-invasive energy evaluations of buildings, focusing on energy use patterns and behaviors. The tool provides information about where and how a customer can reduce total building energy use.

Ingersoll Rand itself has made a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint. In May 2017, the company announced a global climate commitment in the form of:

  • A 50% reduction in the greenhouse gas refrigerant footprint of Ingersoll Rand products by 2020 and lower global warming potential alternatives across its portfolio by 2030;
  • A $500 million investment in product-related research and development through 2019, in order to fund the long-term reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; and
  • A 35% reduction in the greenhouse gas footprint of the company’s office buildings, manufacturing facilities, and fleet by 2020.
