A report says that extension of the EmPOWER Maryland energy efficiency program could add more than 68,000 jobs and $3.75 billion in gross revenues during the next decade.

The story at Penn Energy says that EmPOWER was created in 2008 to help residential and business users add insulation, seal air leaks and move to efficient appliances. It does this via incentives and technical assistance.

The report was prepared by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). In addition to the jobs and revenues, the report says that extending EmPOWER Maryland would reduce consumption of electricity by more than 130 billion hWh and generate $11.7 billion in energy savings for homes and businesses in the state.

The Penn Energy story provided the background while the measure was passing through the state’s legislative process. The Baltimore Sun reported that the state senate voted to extend the program this week and that the House of Delegates did so a week ago.

The Penn Energy story says that the next phase of EmPOWER would include that 2 percent reduction target in energy consumption from the five largest utilities in the state. The jobs created would be concentrated in the construction and related sectors.
