Researchers: Power-to-Gas Storage Out-Performs Lithium-Ion Batteries

Preliminary findings of research on power-to-gas storage conducted at the University of California, Irvine and funded by SoCalGas show that the technology conceivably could be used to stockpile substantial amounts of renewable energy, the academics reported on March 30. In fact, they believe it out-performs lithium-ion battery storage.

Aircuity Helps ASU’s Largest Research Facility Save Energy

Arizona State University has received LEED Gold certification for its new science building, which is designed to be 40 percent more energy efficient compared to a traditional laboratory design, according to Aircuity.

The airside efficiency company worked with ASU to help the school’s largest research facility — the seven-story, 293,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Science and Technology IV building — save energy through centralized demand control ventilation systems. A multiplexed centralized sensing system continually monitors critical indoor parameters, lowering the ventilation when the air is clean and increasing fresh air when an issue has been detected.

UCLA Engineers Develop ‘1,000 Times More Energy Efficient’ RAM

Researchers at UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have found a way to improve computer memory, making it faster and 10 to 1,000 times more energy-efficient, by using electric voltage instead of a flowing electric current.

The ultra-fast, high-capacity class of computer memory is known as magnetoresistive random access memory, or MRAM. The UCLA team says its improved memory, called MeRAM for magnetoelectric random access memory, has potential to be used in future memory chips for smart-phones, tablets, computers and microprocessors, as well as for data storage, like the solid-state disks used in computers and large data centers.
