Government Adding Green Energy to Public Lands

The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management is readying wind and solar projects for public lands, with construction planned by 2011, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said.

Solar projects –mostly in California, Arizona and New Mexico —  will produce 6,000 megawatts of new capacity, according to the International Business Times.

Wind power projects should add another 1,400 MW.

The Department of the Interior has set aside $41 million from the economic stimulus package to advance a “rapid and responsible” move to production of clean energy in public lands, according to the article.

More than 2,800 megawatts of wind energy industry were installed in the United States over the of the first quarter of 2009.

The Obama Administration’s economic stimulus contained billions of dollars for renewable energy additions.
